Step 1: Heat the oil in a large saucepan, then add the onion, carrot, basil and bay leaves and fry gently over a medium heat until the onion has softened slightly.

Step 2: Add the beef and fry for a few minutes, turning, to brown well.

Step 3: Add the tomatoes, tomato puree, salt, pepper and red wine, stir well.

Step 4: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and cook 2-4 hours.
